Food in the News: Chickpeas

How cool is this? In order to keep up with America’s love
affair with
hummus, former tobacco fields in the state of Virginia are being
plowed under to make way for
chickpea farming.

Fresh chickpeas at my local market

Having grown up around smokers, I was taught never to
start the ‘nasty’ habit, therefore, I don’t smoke – never did, never will. Farewell,
tobacco fields!

But, eating chickpeas … well, that’s another story. Just
think of all of the chickpea recipe possibilities!

With chickpeas being so versatile and nutritious, I can’t
think of a better way to recycle the land.

  • If you find fresh chickpeas, you can eat them as-is, like sunflower or pumpkin seeds. Just peel and eat.

  • I love it! Chick peas, one of my favorite foods, yet I've not eaten a fresh one. Perhaps now we'll see more of them at the markets.

    • Gina, Check your local farmer's market for fresh chickpeas. I found some at Maria's Produce on Hypoluxo Rd. east of Military Trail, but call first to see when they're available.
